Getting Ready for an Italian Road Trip

Tuscany

There is no argument that Italy is one of the most incredible destinations in the world! Starting on Tuesday, I will be hitting the road with one of my good friends and exploring Italy by car.  Two blondes taking Italy by storm and me behind the wheel. Should get interesting! You can follow along with me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and via the hashtag #ItalyRoadTrip.

Five Cities in Five Days!

Stop #1: Rome

We will kick off the adventure by wandering through the capital city Roma! Stopping at the classic sights like the Colosseum, the Vatican, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. My go-to Rome expert Rogue Traveler passed along some great tips which I have taken note of, like visiting the Trevi Fountain in the middle of the night.

Stop #2: Tuscany

After Rome, we will be hitting the road and exploring Tuscany. The last time I drove through Tuscany was in 2008 and I have been dying to go back ever since.  So, naturally, given my obsession with wine, a visit to some vineyards and some wine tasting will definitely be on the agenda.  I also plan to make a stop in a small village made popular by a book and movie of the same name. Can you guess which one?? Then we will spend the evening in Florence and spend a day exploring the city.

Stop #3: Cinque Terre

It has been on the top of my list to visit the Cinque Terre for quite some time. There is something about the Italian coastline that is purely magical. I fell in love with Positano and the entire Amalfi Coast and I cannot wait to explore the Italian Riviera. A common misconception about Cinque Terre is that it is not a city. In fact, it is The Cinque Terre, which translates to “The Five Lands” comprising of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stop #4: Lake Como

Lake Como, or Lago di Como in Italian, is one of the most popular destinations in Italy. Ever since Roman times, members of Italy’s high society have flocked to the lake and the tradition has continued over the years as celebrities like George Clooney and Madonna have come here and even own villas on the lake shore.

Stop #5: Milan

Last but not least, our epic Italian road trip will come to an end in Milan, a city synonymous with fashion. As the main commercial, industrial and financial center of Italy, Milan is a bustling city with so much see and do. Milan has countless museums, theaters and landmarks including the fifth largest cathedral in the world the Milan Cathedral.

We will be packing a lot into a very little time. With the right plan, it completely do-able! After Italy I have another very exciting trip coming up so stay tuned for updates on the blog!  A little teaser is that I will be traveling to another “lively” country and going on an adventure with travel blogger and photographer Karen Bianchi from A Prima Vista.
