Checking In: The George Hotel Hamburg

A little piece of Great Britain in Germany. The George is a great choice for your stay in Hamburg.

A little bit of Great Britain in Germany.

First Impressions

The name comes at no surprise since The George is located in St. George! As soon as you enter the hotel, you feel as if you’ve been transported to a chic hotel in London. British design elements are incorporated everywhere from small British flag pillow to giant pictures of British icon Twiggy.  The dim lighting and dark, tufted-leather sofas create an ambiance reminiscent of a British speakeasy.

The Rooms

The George has five different rooms sizes that vary from queen to king size beds and offering views of St. George versus the upgraded rooms that offer views of the Alster. Take for example the medium sized room that comes with a king size bed and views of the Alster (pictured right). Personally, I think a balcony and view of the Alster is essential!

The rooms come equipped with a mini-bar, hair dryer and in-room WiFi that can be a bit spotty. The beds are extremely comfortable.

The hotel has 125 guestrooms, five suites and two penthouses. I particularly loved the brightness of the rooms. Beds are comfortable, the area is quiet at night, and the views from the balcony are some of the best in all of Hamburg.

The Spa

Located on the sixth floor is Dayspa Hamburg. I didn’t get a chance to experience the spa but it is essentially the same day spa as the one at The Gastwerk Hotel (which I did visit). Following suit to the Gastwerk, this Moroccon-style spa offers a sauna and a lounge area to relax. The same masseuses work at both hotels so the level of service and quality of services I can imagine continue between The George and The Gastwerk where I named the spa experience in my top five.

Hotel Restaurant & Bar

The hotel’s restaurant DaCaio serves Italian cuisine with an extensive wine list. While the menu is continuously changing, menu items that stood out to me were the Truffel Ravioli and the seared sashimi-grade tuna. (Remember, I’m a pescatarian!) Breakfast is also served in this restaurant.

The hotel bar called Bar DaCaio was somewhat happening, especially during the day – perhaps due to the fact that I was there on a Sunday but I could see that it was definitely a hangout spot for locals, hotel guests and visitors. Continuing with the hotel design, the British design elements are incorporated in the bar creating a trendy speakeasy style feel. Very cutting edge! There is one section of the bar (pictured above) that has an accessible outlet making this the perfect place to post up and get some work done while sipping on an espresso or cocktail from the bar.

What really makes The George special is the rooftop bar. As a former New Yorker, I can’t tell you how much we love our rooftop bars. The Campari Lounge offers views of the Alster (the big lake in the center of the city). It is no surprise that this is “the place to be” during summertime in Hamburg.

Other Things to Note

The George has a complimentary car to use. But not just any car, a jag! Simply ask for the keys at the front desk and zoom…off you go in a beautiful Jaguar. What isn’t to love about that!

Another cool element about The George is the library just off the lobby. With a plethora of books to choose from, you can chill out on a leather couch and get service from the bar. Don’t mind if I do!

What’s Around

There is a market close by but remember markets are closed on Sundays. The best part about The George’s location is the proximity to the Alster. The lake is stunning! The perimeter is completely walkable and is an absolute must when weather permits.

Getting Here

The George is located near the main central station Hamburg HBF.  From the station to the hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk. Therefore, I would recommend taking a taxi (approximately €6) to the hotel from the train station.

Final Say: A GREAT CHOICE. The George is a beautiful hotel in a very convenient location. The staff is absolutely lovely and quick to be of service. This would be my go-to hotel during summer because of the rooftop bar.

My stay at The George was provided complimentary. As always, services provided complimentary do not always guarantee favorable reviews. I am always 100% honest in my reviews and will always be completely transparent to ensure that my readers remain completely confident in The Wellist.
