After traveling all over Bali on a budget, here are my picks for the best hotels under $50.

It might surprise you to learn that you don’t have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on this magical island to get five-star treatment.  I found Bali to be a fairly economical destination, especially during off-season and shoulder season. The Balinese are a gracious people who aim to please and you don’t have to stay at a five-star hotel to get that sort of treatment.  No matter what the star rating, you are greeted with smiling faces from the moment you walk into a hotel. After traveling all over the island of Bali, here are my picks for some of the best luxury budget hotels – all for less than $50 per night!

1. Loft Legian Hotel

Jl. Melasti 99, Legian – Kuta, Bali, Indonesia | +62 361 760 027 Website | Twitter | Facebook | $$$$

Not only does this hotel have a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf located in the lobby, it is also just two blocks from the beach, great shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The contemporary hotel has 50 guestrooms each complete with a flatscreen TV, hot shower and free in-room Wi-Fi. This hotel was in the center of the action with a five-star feel for a budget-hotel price.  Legian is a great spot from which to explore the southern part of Bali.  It is nearby but not in the middle of the Kuta party scene and you can avoid the overpriced hotels and resorts in neighboring Seminyak.

2. Tunjung Mas Bungalows

Jl. Raya Pengosekan – Padangtegal, Ubud, Bali, Indonesia | +62 361 971326 Website $$$$

Possibly one of the most famous towns in Bali, Ubud is a must-visit on a trip to Bali.  There are so many hotels in and around the Ubud area that it makes it rather dificult to choose the best one, especially when prices vary considerably.  Surrounded by tropical gardens and a waterfall pool, Tunjung Mas Bungalows is a great hotel choice for those who want to be near Monkey Forest Road without paying the inflated prices.  Located on the main road, the hotel is set far back down a stone driveway. There is also a spa onsite that offers fabulous massages at great prices.  Each room has its own little patio where breakfast is served at the time of your request.  Ask the front desk to arrange a motorbike for $5 USD per day and hit the road exploring everything in and around Ubud.

Part of Rama Hotels & Resorts collection, the Rama Candidasa is a luxury, four-star hotel located in the coastal village of Candidasa. When you check-in, you are greeted with a lei of orange flowers and then escorted to your beautiful bungalow complete with a patio.  Grab one of the complimentary bikes from the front desk and take a ride into town. Free yoga classes are also offered on select days.  Note: Prices at this hotel vary depending on when you book so keep an eye out for deals on sights like Agoda.

4. Bedulu Resort Amed

Bunutan Village, Amed, Bali, Indonesia | + 62 877 628 549 01 Website | $$$$

Cruising up the eastern coast of the island you will find the village of Amed and this is a tiny little Bed & Breakfast with only six rooms.  Definitely spring for the superior room over the standard because the standard rooms are a little rundown. It is a bit of a hike to get to the rooms and one of the guys from the front desk will carry your bags up the winding walkway through your private bungalow’s garden.  Once at the top, you can relax on your patio’s daybed and take in the views of the ocean. If you are in Amed and need a place to stay, this is your best bet for a budget hotel.

Take a ferry from the town of Sanur and in just under an hour you have arrived at the island of Nusa Lembongan.  A great place to stay on the island is the Sunset Coin Cottage and Spa.  This little inn has just six bungalow-style rooms that are set amidst tropical gardens.  Comfortable deck chairs line the outdoor pool where you can relax while drinking a fresh cocktail from the bar.  Take a quick, 5-meter stroll down the road and you are at the beautiful Sunset Beach. Post-up on your private balcony and watch the sun sink behind the horizon.  Things tend to be rather spread out on the island so ask the friendly staff to help arrange a motorbike for you.
