Some of the best vegetarian food in all of Thailand can be found in the Northern city of Chiang Mai. An overall “healthy” atmosphere has found a home here in the mountainous city and rightfully so there is a high concentration of vegetarian restaurants located in and around the city walls.  With so many places to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming to select the perfect vegetarian eatery during a visit to Chiang Mai.  Here are the best of the best in no particular order:

Located near the Tai Phae Gate, this vegetarian restaurant offers healthy dishes in a relaxed atmosphere where you can sit on cushions in the upstairs loft section.  Be sure to try the fresh spring rolls and one of the tasty, flavorful soups. Stick to more of the Asian-themed dishes as opposed to a sandwich.

You feel as if you are dining in someone’s home as opposed to a restaurant.  Don’t forget to take your shoes off before entering! Free Bird Cafe is an organic vegetarian and vegan charity cafe where 100% of the profits go to Thai Freedom House, a language and arts community learning center for Indigenous Peoples and Burmese refugees.  Try the traditional Burmese dish Khao soi which is usually made with pork but at this vegetarian spot its made with veggies. Super yummy!

The small organic farm, seed saving center, and sustainable living and learning center called Pun Pun has two restaurant locations in Chiang Mai. Both of their restaurants use the produce grown on their farm. When supply runs short, they purchase produce from local, organic farmers.  Pun Pun aims to support local, organic farmers, farmer networks and propagate biodiversity.  Pun Pun is more than just an amazing restaurant – it is also a great cause.

This tiny little restaurant is tucked inside the Kad Klang Wiang Plaza at the corner of Ratchadamnoen Road and Ratppakinai Road.  Serving simple, vegetarian fare this is a great place to stop for a bit while wandering around the Old City. Be sure to try some of the fresh juices.

This food cart is located in the heart of the famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar.  Turn down the road opposite the car-park of Mc Donald’s and at the end of the road you will find the cart – located near the Red Lion English Pub. While not purely vegetarian it serves some of the best Pad Thai in all of Thailand. This place is not to be missed. Order at the cart and then grab a seat at one of the plastic tables in the little courtyard behind cart.
